JAMES CLAR

James Clar is a designer and artist whose work deals with light and visual systems. He studied film at New York University and went on to receive his Masters in Media Art. His thesis project the 3D Display Cube (viewable during this exhibition) received the “Design Distinction Award” by I.D. magazine.
James has been involved in various design residencies such as Eyebeam Atelier in New York, Fabrica in Italy, and FedEx Institute of Technology in Memphis. His work has been shown in places such as the New Museum of Contemporary Arts, Chelsea Art Museum, Japan Media Arts Festival, Seoul Design Festival, Chanel Mobile Art Exhibition along with a collaborative piece collected by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

James resides as the Director of Media Technologies at Traffic. For his first public exhibition in Dubai, James has created an array of new work and installations. A total of 22 one-off and numbered pieces will be exhibited in addition to 3 installations

Square Eclipse 2k6

The Square Eclipse 2006 uses 24 microcontrolled tri-color LEDs that are carefully positioned behind the unit to create clean geometric patterns of light and shadow. This piece brings the focus from the center of the unit to its perimeter, creating kaleidoscopic patterns that takes advantage of light's additive color properties. As colored contours from one LED intersects with the colored contours from other LEDs they create new patterns and colors that morph as animations are played through the full spectrum LEDs.
